During my recent trip to Spain, what impressed me the most was none other than the kindness of Spaniards. The warmth I experienced from them resonated deeply, distinctly different from my visit 22 years ago, and it felt particularly special when compared to the kindness of people from other countries I've encountered. In this article, I aim to explore the unique communication styles of each culture by comparing the 'stoic but warm' kindness of Koreans, the 'politeness' of Japanese, the 'stiffness' of the British, and the 'Friendly' kindness of Spaniards.
Types of Kindness: Spain's 'Friendly' vs. Japan's 'Politeness' vs. Korea's 'Tsundere'
Spaniards' kindness can be summed up in one word: 'Friendly'. They approach you with a bright smile, readily empathizing with your troubles and eager to help, making their warmth palpable. Their sincere desire to welcome and assist shines through in their eyes and expressions, creating a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere as if you were meeting an old friend.
In contrast, Japanese kindness stems from 'politeness'. Rooted in a flawless service manual and respect for others, their kindness is unwavering and without flaw. They consistently practice etiquette and are extremely considerate to ensure that others do not feel discomfort. While it is perfect, there can be a sense of coldness at times.
On the other hand, Korean kindness may seem somewhat lacking in the outward warmth seen in Japanese politeness or Spanish friendliness, appearing a bit aloof. It mirrors the idea of being 'stoic on the outside but warm on the inside'. It is rare for Koreans to approach foreigners proactively with kindness. However, once help is requested, there is a deep warmth that emerges, akin to treating your problem as their own. This blend of deep consideration and affection (情) is what epitomizes the unique kindness of Koreans.
As for the British, since English is their native language, I often felt that their responses weren't very warm when approached in English. A stiff and businesslike attitude is common, and they tend to prioritize efficiency and practicality over kindness. There is also an impression of wanting to minimize unnecessary emotional exchanges.
Changes After 22 Years: Fluent English Communication in Spain
I recall that during my trip to Spain 22 years ago, English was hardly spoken, making communication difficult. However, I was greatly surprised this time to find that English is widely spoken everywhere. With the increase in tourists, the language barriers have significantly diminished, enhancing the overall convenience of travel.
Real Experiences of Spanish Kindness: Patience and Consideration
The kindness of Spaniards truly shined through in small everyday moments.
Café Episode: At a café, delicious breads and desserts are displayed, but the menu is often difficult to read as it’s in Spanish. With a line behind me, I found myself struggling with the order, feeling pressed for time. However, Spanish staff showed no sign of irritation and gladly spent a long time helping me to order, even more than the customers waiting behind me. Their smiles, as they pointed out each menu item with their fingers to help me order accurately, left a lasting impression. You could truly feel their genuine desire to alleviate the customer's discomfort.
Prado Museum Café Episode: I had a similar experience at the café inside the Prado Museum. After ordering several items and receiving the food, I realized I had forgotten to pick up one item that was not yet ready as I returned to my table. It was confusing to determine what to do next. Should I wait in line again to explain the situation? How could I prove that I didn’t actually receive that item since it wasn’t detailed on the receipt? I even couldn't remember the name of that menu item, anxiously pacing in my mind.
At that moment, I saw a Spanish waiter from a distance looking for me and waving. He came over holding a plate with a warm panini, smiling brightly as he approached. He had remembered and brought me the item I had left behind. It was truly a heartwarming and touching moment.
Such kindness from Spaniards goes beyond mere formal service; it appears to stem from a genuine warmth and concern for people. Thanks to their cheerful and friendly attitudes, this trip was filled with particularly special and enjoyable memories.
I hope my experiences with the kindness of Spaniards resonate with you. In the next post, I will share more fascinating aspects of my travels in Spain.
