Stray Cats in Our Neighborhood
Since early last year, stray cats have started to appear one by one in our neighborhood. At first, I would only encounter them occasionally by chance on the street, but these days, seeing a stray cat is no longer a rare sight. Since I often notice them, it seems that their population is gradually increasing. As a cat lover, I have naturally come to appreciate their presence, and I often carry a handful of cat food in my bag to share snacks with the cats I meet on the street. I believe that if I can provide even a moment of comfort to a hungry stray cat through this small act, it is enough.
I believe stray cats are a part of nature that lives alongside us even in urban environments created by humans. These animals are struggling to survive day by day behind the scenes of the streets we often pass by. Therefore, I see stray cats not merely as 'wild animals living in the city', but as living beings that must coexist with humans.
Of course, my perspective on stray cats may not resonate with everyone. Not everyone loves cats, after all. There are people who feel uncomfortable about the presence of stray cats or even act out against them. Such discomfort can lead to indifference, or worse, harmful actions. Every time I encounter such cases, I worry about whether the stray cats can live safely in the city.
Our Attitude Towards Living with Stray Cats
On the other hand, I also think that the rapid increase in the population of stray cats is not necessarily a good thing. The city is a dangerous environment for stray cats to survive in. In fact, I have seen a few stray cats lose their lives due to accidents, and it has always pained my heart. To solve this issue, I believe it is necessary for local governments and private organizations to support spaying and neutering to maintain the stray cat population at a reasonable level. After all, stray cats also have the right to live safely in coexistence with humans.
Yesterday, on my way home, I discovered a very small kitten. It was perhaps a couple of months old? Its tiny, adorable face and round eyes looking up at me were truly heartwarming. However, within those eyes, I could see a hint of wariness and fear of survival. Thinking of the life of a stray cat that has to survive alone in danger with such a small and fragile body made me feel more pity than affection. I couldn't help but wonder how long such a small cat could endure in this harsh city, and my heart sank.
In this city where we live alongside stray cats, I hope that we can make a little effort to create a better living environment for them.
