The Secret to Mental Management: How to Properly Understand Positive Thinking
As we navigate life, we face countless challenges. Sometimes our environment or circumstances put pressure on us and shake our foundations, but the key to overcoming these is in our mental state. Since March 2023, I have started a brand called 312, but the biggest realization I gained from about 10 years in sales and running an academy before that was the importance of mental management.
Understanding Positive Thinking Properly
Many people misunderstand what positive thinking truly means. They often mistake vague optimism, like saying "everything will turn out well," or hope without acknowledging the situation as a form of positive thinking. However, true positive thinking is the ability to face reality while finding positive elements within it.
- Do not ignore reality: Accepting the current situation as it is is the first step. This allows you to accurately identify where changes are needed.
- Focus on what you have: People often focus on what they do not have, increasing their anxiety. However, finding and utilizing the resources and possibilities you already possess is the key to strengthening your mental state.
The Real Meaning of Focusing on What You Have
Focusing on what you have means focusing on the positives rather than the negatives.
Simply put, if you have 10 tasks to complete today and only finish 2, most people emotionally focus on the 8 tasks left undone. But if you focus on what you have, you’ll concentrate on "I completed 2 tasks today." In other words, you are focusing on what you 'did' rather than what you 'did not do'.
This allows you to not ignore the 8 tasks left undone, but instead look for ways to complete more since you have already finished 2. Such a mindset blocks the negative emotions and thoughts that arise from concentrating on what you 'could not do', and shifts your thoughts and feelings towards the positives you currently possess, which is the direction for further progress.
Typically, these negative thoughts deepen when one bases their self-worth on external factors (money, appearance, qualifications, etc.), promoting comparison with others. Conversely, when one focuses on the internal criteria and personal standards, concentrating on the plus, what is present, you can prevent the emotional and energy drain that comes from focusing on the negatives.
The Effect of Mental Management: Keeping Energy and Atmosphere Flowing
When you start managing your mental state, your expressions change; when your expressions change, the atmosphere changes; and when the atmosphere changes, the energy shifts as well. It’s like the stagnant water of a stream or puddle becoming clear and flowing again.
- The Dangers of Stagnant Emotions: When emotions, energy, and atmosphere stagnate, the negative impact deepens and the likelihood of worse things happening increases.
- Restoring the Flow: Once this stagnant energy begins to flow through mental management, negative situations gradually dissolve. This leads to fresh air and decreases the chances of bad occurrences.
Of course, in the beginning, small negative incidents may occur, akin to a test. But once you get through this phase, you’ll leave behind the murky energy and greet the changed circumstances and clearer atmosphere.
How to Steady a Shaken Mind
When our minds are shaken, we are prone to making poor decisions. To avoid this, try to practice a few simple habits.
- Try Writing a Journal
-
Write down 3 good things that happened during the day. The habit of finding small joys can lead to significant changes.
-
Create a Routine to Calm Your Mind
-
Engage in activities like meditation, walking, or listening to your favorite music to establish a routine for calming your mind.
-
Training to Focus on the ‘Now’
- Rather than dwelling on regrets of the past or worrying about the future, immerse yourself in the present moment. The 'now' is the only time we can change.
In Conclusion: Supporting Your Mental State
Mental management does not happen overnight. However, through the process of taking steps forward, we can build a stronger version of ourselves. Starting today, focus on what you have. A small change can lead to a significant difference.
